The time has come – we are harvesting maize! 🌽 On our fields in Uganda the cobs are plump and golden, and full sacks are piling up everywhere. The harvest is still in full swing, but one thing is already clear: it is going to be a really good one.
We owe that above all to our own irrigation. While the dry season is hitting many fields in the region hard, we were able to water our maize evenly – and you can see it in every single cob. Now the many busy hands of our children and helpers are bringing it in, basket by basket and sack by sack.
Why this harvest makes us so happy:
- Food for the children: maize is a staple food – among other things it is used to cook posho, which fills the children up every day.
- A step towards self-sufficiency: what we grow ourselves, we don’t have to buy in at a high price – that makes us more independent.
- The irrigation is paying off: we can grow and harvest even in the dry season – no longer just once a year when the rains come.
- Stores & seed: part of the harvest will be stored, and part will become seed for the next sowing.
And our greatest joy is, and always will be, the beaming children we do all this for. Thank you for making this harvest possible – step by step, we are growing towards self-sufficiency. 💚
