Opening of the Vocational and Bible School in Uganda – A Big Step for the Future
Wednesday was a very special day for our project: the official opening of the vocational and Bible school on our own 10,000 m² plot of land. The whole village came together to celebrate this moment with us.
The school is a project close to our hearts. Over the next few months, the twelve students will live there and build their own huts right on the land – 12 in total. Until then, they all sleep together in one big hut. This hands-on learning and the sense of community are central to our work.
On the large plot they also grow maize, potatoes, mangoes, bananas and more – for their own needs and for the orphans. On Saturdays and Sundays they will help out in a very practical way at the children’s home there and support local churches.
Thanks to good planning, we were able to provide all the materials in advance: study Bibles and notebooks for lessons, and chairs, tables and cupboards for the classroom. For the practical training we bought tools for bricklaying and carpentry, moulds for making bricks and much more. Everyday things like cooking pots, mattresses and blankets are part of it too – because a school needs more than just books and tools.
The training covers practical skills such as brick making, building huts, woodwork and roofing, as well as theological training and character formation. Three teachers – a bricklayer, a carpenter and a Bible school teacher – accompany the students on their journey. By the way, the students will live here for 1 year (three terms) and have the chance to receive a further 2 years of training until they are fully qualified in a trade.
On opening day, I had the privilege of giving the first lesson and speaking about Genesis 1 – about the foundation of faith and of life, which also holds true for this school and for the future of these young people.
The opening was a big celebration full of joy and hope. We see this school as a real ray of hope for the village and beyond – an investment in the future that brings together trade skills, education and faith.
